Banana (Musa) is the most popular fruit and globally the fourth most widely consumed crop by man after rice, wheat and corn. Banana Economy involves production front and marketing arrangements of banana as it possesses commercial, nutritional as well as environmental values. In Assam and Meghalaya people depend on different types of banana as a source of livelihood and wellbeing. The government has already planned for boosting the production of banana both for domestic consumption and exports.Strategies for boosting banana cultivation is planned to be taken up under the recently launched “National Horticulture Mission”. According to the International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain (INIBAP) India is the largest producer of banana accounting to about 23 per cent of global output, about three times share of the next country Brazil; with an annual production 16.91 million tonnes from 490.7 million hectares.
